Abstract
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a new surgical procedure with is applied mainly to adult patient and considered safe and effective comparing with open cholecystectomy for the treatment of gallbladder disease. However in pediatric patients, this
procedure is less popular because cholelithiasis is rare and th safety of this procedure is not proven in children.
The authors experienced a cases of successful laparoscopic cholecystectomy in a 5 year and 7 month old pediatric patient weighing 19.5 kg. The patient did not have any hemolytic disease or hereditary disease and showed normal growth and
development
pattern. After operation, the patient returned to normal life without complication after 20days of postoperative hospital stay.
The operative technique that has been described for adults was totally appliable for this patient. However, due to the size of the abdominal cavity which is quite smaller than adult patients, care should be taken inserting trocars and
instruments.
In
conclusion, laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be applied to the pediatric patient safely if the size of the abdominal cavity can accommodate trocars and instruments.
